A boilermaker site....
Nowadays, we say to ourselves, a boiler plant... but what could it be?
It's quite simple, it's a place where, starting from limestone, we make lime.
And Châteaupanne being a place where limestone quarries are exploited, it is logical that we find, not far from there, a boiler room site!
It is even the oldest boiler site in the Loire, classified as a historical monument, with three remaining furnaces, the Jalousie, the Union, and Clermont.
In the town of Montjean-sur-Loire, about 20 minutes from Angers, there are no less than 24 lime kilns spread over 13 production sites.
Boilermaking activity has been documented since the 15th century and developed in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, you can walk on an intramural path that presents them and you walk around them in about 11 km.
