Oenographer?
An oenologist, we know... he's a wine specialist.
A graphic designer, we know... he's a drawing specialist.
But we don't know an oenographer. And for a good reason, there is only one copy!
His name is François Le Menac'h. And this title, he attributed it to himself, because he knows wines very well, it is the least we can say, and he is an outstanding designer doubled by a painter... of good vintage!
Which wines?
He declares, to "the New Republic", that he likes it when he paints somewhere, to try to use a wine with a local appellation. But this is not always possible, of course. So he chooses according to the place, and the mood...
he paints on paper, flat, and noticed that, if the alcohol evaporates immediately, what remains on the leaf ages slowly, at the same rate as the wine itself in its barrel. And, if each wine has its own composition and therefore its own colour, of course, each year is, in addition, different from the others. For a given wine, the 2012 vintage will not give the same result, the same shade, on paper, as the 2014 vintage!
Drink up!
He says he paints "dry ass".
Don't think, however, that he empties his glass with each brushstroke. What he means by that is that he respects the wines he uses, and does not add the slightest additive, and not the slightest drop of water.
And it is wonderful to see your brush twirl, by freehand, without prior drawing, obtaining, with the same glass of wine, all kinds of shades.
And these nuances persist over time. I myself bought a painting from him a few years ago, and its outdated shades have not faded as, I must admit, I feared it a little....
Small selection....
I have selected some of his works to give you an idea of his original talent. You may meet him on his folding chair, one fine day of a summer in Saint Peter's Square in Saumur, in the streets of Chinon... good weather is essential, because imagine the disaster if an indelicate cloud was going to drop a few drops of water...oh !
For you too?
He also works on commission. You can always try to contact him....
