Skirts: this museum puts you out!

Carnuta, the House of Man and the Forest... get out!

This Maison de l'Homme et de la forêt is located, of course, in the heart of a forest, the magnificent Bercé forest, in the Sarthe region.

If there is one forest that clearly demonstrates the fruitful links between itself and the foresters, it is the forest of Bercé. Indeed, after centuries of careful care, selection and maintenance, these oaks have now acquired a worldwide reputation. This former royal forest, intended to provide the navy with the quality wood it needed, now supplies, among other things, the cooperage, before some of its trees, immense and straight, were undoubtedly selected to form part of the new framework of Notre-Dame.

It leaves one wondering when one stands at the foot of some of them, over 350 years old, and which Colbert could have admired himself!

So, perhaps it is not very surprising that one of the first concerns of this "museum" is to encourage you... to get out of it!

To get out of it on foot, by offering you ideas for hikes in the Bercé forest, or by bike, by offering you, there too, itineraries, and even repair kits!

Carnuta, the House of Man and the Forest... even inside, get out!

If there is a museum whose interior is entirely turned towards the outside, this is it!

It is a very atypical architecture that welcomes you, and plunges you right into the world of the forest. Soft and undulating lines, covered with chestnut shingles on the facade, and, inside, spruce posts and beams, with birch as decoration.

It is a place that invites you to travel among the century-old oaks, in a playful and interactive way, with images, sounds, fines, models, and games...

In fact, it is a day in the Bercé forest which is proposed to you, through this very lively museography... will you be able to distinguish the noise of the earthworm? Will you be able to recognize the deer's bellow, to differentiate between tree species? You will also plunge into the world of forest animals, large and small, discover the work of the agents of the National Forestry Office, and understand the gestures of woodworkers, cabinetmakers, carpenters, clog makers, coopers...
