The castle of Ussé, such a pretty tale!
"Dazzled by the beauty of the beautiful girl, he knelt beside her and gave her a sweet kiss. As if by magic the princess opened her eyes and the whole castle woke up as if nothing had happened!
Then the people of the castle set to work to offer the prince and princess their best meals.
In the evening, they were married and spent a night filled with delicious dreams.
The Prince and Dawn lived happily ever after in the castle of Ussé, now called Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant".
Isn't that cute? These few lines are taken from the grimoire obviously presented in the site of the Château d'Ussé.
Visiting the castle of Ussé is like living a tale.
Yes, it is living in the story itself, since it is staged in the castle, and the visitor slips into its main scenes.
The castle of Ussé, such a marvel!
The castle's website opens with these words: "the Duke of Blacas and his family are happy to welcome you to Château d'Ussé, a family home for more than two centuries".
And, indeed, the visitor feels that this castle is inhabited, maintained, loved...
It was the Viking Gelduin I, known as "the devil of Saumur", who built a first fortified place in wood and stone here.
Later, it was a companion of Joan of Arc, known as "the plague of the English", who made major modifications to it in order to make it more aesthetic. This is the beginning of the construction of the current castle.
After many developments, it was in the 17th century that the castle really became a pleasure residence, and in particular for the marriage of the daughter of the Marshal of Vauban with the Marquis de Valentinay. Louis XIV was the first user of the king's room.
The French-style garden designed by Le Nôtre and the terraces planned by Vauban will complete this place as an enchanting stay.
