Saumur: Saint Pierre... du Marais church!
The old people of Bruges remember that Saint-Pierre Church was called, by its full name, Saint-Pierre du Marais Church, attesting that, when it was built, the marshes stretched from the banks of the Loire to its feet, which is a little surprising today when you see the city that is built there.
This church, therefore, had its feet in the water, that is the origin, and therefore rested on long wooden piles, deeply sunk. And it has remained that way for centuries, because wood, when it is in the water, does not rot.
Problem: the swamp is gone!
And from then on, the stakes began to deteriorate, and the church to tip!
This has recently given rise to very important restoration work to consolidate it with suitable bases.
At the same time, the facade was renovated.
Having regained its original whiteness, it is now superb, under the sun.
Saumur, Saint Peter's Square and its houses with wooden facades
It reigns in Saint Peter's Square, where the last houses with wooden facades in Saumur are located, with some typical restaurants.
All this forms a harmonious and peaceful whole, out of time, which is best visited on Saturday mornings, market day.
Among other local products, you will find so-called "Parisian" mushrooms, picked that very morning in its troglodyte mushroom houses by a white-haired dama that is all about the subject! That very morning! They can't say the same... in Paris!
