Malicorne sur Sarthe " city and crafts "
In the heart of the Sarthe valley, between Le Mans and Angers, lies Malicorne sur Sarthe, and the village's workshops from which, for 300 years, have produced earthenware and ceramics.
It is in 1747 that an earthenware worker native of Touraine settled in the village and created the first workshop. He saw that he was benefiting from particularly favourable circumstances, a clay soil, a lot of wood around for the kilns, and, in addition, a small port for trade... perfect!
But, around the middle of the 19th century, a competitor began to invade: the common stoneware pottery, made of glazed earthenware, mainly for cooking.
The earthenware factories then adapted, and took over the decorations of large cities such as Rouen, Strasbourg, Marseille, etc..
Today, Malicorne sur Sarthe, proudly bearing its label "city and arts and crafts", still has two pottery factories in operation, and craftsmen's workshops that you will discover while strolling through the streets.
