Yesterday...
Chaillac has a rich mining past. Barite and fluorite were mined here. The Fluorite mine, site of Rossignol, for example, was exploited in gallery from a well and, in 1979, the vein was at 100 meters of depth and made 600 meters long. In 1980, the vein was at 250 meters and was 1000 meters long, for an extraction of more than 20 000 tons...
Today...
The activity ceased in 1997, but there are still rich testimonies, as can be judged by the very interesting visit of the Museum of Mineralogy, installed in a restored farmhouse with a very modern architecture. This museum, in addition to showing the activities that took place in the mines, also presents a very nice collection of fine stones.
And if you can be there, in addition, at the time of the annual mineral show, you will be able (in addition!) to make yourself a small pleasure, and to leave with a beautiful rough stone, or worked in jewels, for example!
