The castle of Azay le Rideau is located on an island in the middle of the indre on which it is gently reflected, and this under the patronage of François Ier.
Well... under patronage... it's a figure of speech
Indeed, Gilles Berthelot, adviser to King Louis XII and treasurer of France, bought the medieval fortress that stood there around 1510. He is rich. It must be said that he distinguished himself in the service of the King of France by creating new taxes (already!), and that he might have confused the State coffers a little bit with his own. Also, after having part of the old fortress demolished to build a castle under the Italian influence that has been all the rage since the victories of Francis I, and after having completed the work, he has little time to enjoy it.Indeed, Francis I, who suspected something, ordered an investigation, which revealed wrongdoing. And as one of his colleagues, in the same circumstance, was executed, our Gilles Berthelot fled, leaving his wife and castle there.Francis I took over the castle, although Berthelot's wife stamped on the spot to recover his property, and offered it to one of his followers.Let's spend a few centuries, and here we are in the period 2014 to 2017, during which very important restoration work, both of the park and the castle, is being carried out. From now on, it is a castle of Azay le Rideau which has just experienced a second... rebirth which awaits you, by reflecting in its calm waters, "faceted diamond set by the Indre" (Balzac)
