A beautiful castle...
First of all, it is a very beautiful castle in the Loire Valley, very white like its counterparts, since, like them, it is built in the tuffeau extracted from the hills. You will find it about ten kilometers from Saumur.
Its construction began in the 11th century, and for centuries it belonged to the very powerful Dreux-Brézé family. Then, by marriage, he was taken over by the Colbert family, descendant of the minister of Louis XIV.
His visit alone is worth a visit.
And, below, another castle....
But this castle, classified as a historical monument, is perhaps one of the castles of the Loire Valley that arouses more curiosity, because, below it, there is another castle, an underground fortress dating from the year 1000!
A rather important gallery of slope, very wide, makes it possible to discover a set of cavities which constitute a formidable example of troglodyte dependences. Among other things, you will discover the most important underground bakery in France, the deepest moats in Europe, three 16th century presses among the most important in Western France....
Plan, therefore, a double visit, one for the top, and the other for the bottom!
