Museum of Education. In Rouen, museum education !

In Rouen, an education museum created by Jules Ferry

At first glance, it may seem unusual to think of putting education in a museum, whose exhibits would be visited, nicely stored in display cases. In fact, the purpose of this museum is not really to preserve, but to provide working material, to enable teaching professionals to appropriate the elements of a permanent pedagogical evolution. This does not prevent the general public from discovering the stages.

Jules ferry

Recognized as one of the fathers of republican identity, he is unanimously hailed as the one who restored free and compulsory education. It is therefore not surprising that in 1879, he founded the Pedagogical Museum, which has been located in Rouen since 1980, a museum that "is responsible for providing our primary education with the same services as the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers provides to technical education".

The establishment in Rouen

Currently, the Museum of Education is divided between two locations, the Maison des Quatre Fils Aymon, which was extensively renovated in 2001, and a resource centre located in a new building in 2010.

900,000 documents !

It is truly a place to visit, which gives an idea of the extraordinary richness and variety of educational materials, among others. It contains more than 900,000 documents on the history of education from the 16th century to the present day, and the exhibition centre is open to all audiences.

The House of the Four Aymon Sons

The house itself is already worth a visit!

Located in an exceptional setting, in the heart of the historic district of Rouen, it dates back to about 1475. It is one of the most remarkable half-timbered houses in the city.

One would think that four famous sons lived there, considering his name... well, not at all! In fact, its name is the title of a medieval chivalry novel!

It was built by a family of drapers. But, over the centuries, the district's activity gradually changed, and it evolved, around the 18th century, into a district of low-cost housing. At that time, the house became a furnished hotel and a drinking establishment, which gradually turned into an unfamiliar place, legends say.

Fallen into neglect, it was acquired by the city in 1960, and the facades are classified as Historical Monument.
In 1975, it was assigned to the Ministry of National Education.
