A unique establishment....
Everyone knows that ports exist, and especially in cities located by the sea! So there is the port, the port café, the port hotel, etc.
And, as everyone knows, there are also museums, and not necessarily in cities located by the sea! So there is the entrance to the museum, the corridors of the museum, the artists on display in the museum, etc.
But no one knows that a "Port museum" exists, and yet it also exists. More precisely, it exists in one and only one copy, and it is in Douarnenez!
Two museums
This famous "port museum" is made up of two groups: the "Museum on land" and the "Museum on the water".
The "land-based museum" is housed in a former sardine cannery. It presents a collection of first boats, a Senegalese caseyeur, a Portuguese fishing boat, a basket boat from Vietnam, a sailing boat from Bangladesh, among others... you will also find a multitude of objects.
The "musée à flot", unique in France, is open from April to October. Without wanting to list all the boats you can admire, we can mention a Norwegian coastal sailboat, a Breton gabare, an Arab dhow, a sardine boat, a buoyant lighthouse and buoys of Morbihan, an English fire boat, a lobster boat, etc.....
In short, the museum's website states that it is "dedicated to the boats and men of Brittany and elsewhere" and presents "a national reference collection with many faces, an invitation to travel through the maritime cultures of Europe, Asia, Africa or Oceania, aboard work or pleasure boats". He invites us to "discover the infinite richness of the maritime worlds, the mixing of ideas, the technical tingling, the nourishing mother, life on board and in port".
Good luck with that!
