Among the articles devoted to the ecomuseums of the "Great West", all unique and unusual, here are the ecomuseums of the Vendée.
Ecomuseums, or the memory of human life
There are about 300 eco-museums in the world, 200 of which are in Europe. Their actions: to keep alive the knowledge and usefulness of the tangible and intangible heritage of a region, of a population through research, presentation, conservation, and enhancement of properties, activities, trades, know-how...
As a result, each ecomuseum is rich in its own unique and unusual features.
The « Grand Ouest Insolite », therefore, presents them.
You will find there the ecomuseums, department by department, with addresses, useful links, and a small description taken from their websites, or documents dedicated to them.
If you want to discover them all, type "eco-museums" in the small search tool at the top of each page, to the right of the « Grand Ouest Insolite » logo

Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez (85) : Écomusée de la bourrine du Bois-Juquaud
Thanks to the commitment of the city of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and the association "Les Amis de la bourrine du bois Juquaud", the museum is the heir to collections, know-how and traditions that it must preserve, enrich, enhance, animate and exhibit.
La "bourrine du bois Juquaud" is an authentic collection of reed-covered earthen buildings that bear witness to life in the marsh at the beginning of the 20th century.
This former farm consists of the bourrine itself, a restored and still furnished place of residence, and many ancillary buildings (the barn, the dairy, the henhouse, the shed, etc.).
A new scientific and cultural project was validated in 2017, which will enable the museum to enhance the way of life of market gardeners, while reflecting contemporary issues: seasonal cycles, resources from the territory, earth and reed architecture.
In the meantime, the museum closed its doors in September 2018, to focus on the reflection and implementation of this transformation (more information with this link).
Until then, here is a video dedicated to the bourrine, made by the City of Saint Hilaire de Riez!
Of course, you can also read this little article from the « Grand Ouest Insolite » dedicated to him!
