The ecomuseums of the Manche

Among the articles devoted to the ecomuseums of the "Great West", all unique and unusual, here are the ecomuseums of the Manche.

Ecomuseums, or the sharing of human memory

Ecomuseums were experimented with in 1968 in National Parks, before becoming a national and international phenomenon. There are about 300 of them in the world, 200 of them in Europe. They carry out research, presentation, conservation and enhancement actions of properties, activities, trades and know-how, which form the tangible and intangible heritage of a region or a population.

As a result, each of them is rich in its own unique and unusual particularities.

The « Grand Ouest Insolite », therefore, presents them.

Department by department, you will find the list of ecomuseums, addresses, useful links, and a small description taken from their websites, or documents dedicated to them.

If you want to discover them all, type "eco-museums" in the small search tool at the top of each page, to the right of the « Grand Ouest Insolite » logo.

Marchésieux (50) - Maison des marais

The architecture of this beautiful 18th century building is traditional and typical of marsh houses.
In this museum, which is currently being renovated, you will be able to discover the life and work of the past, the traditions of this territory whose life was essentially animated and punctuated, throughout the seasons, by the marshes. You can also admire a bakery with its oven, the construction of which was completed in 1993.

Brouains (50) - Écomusée du moulin de la Sée, maison de l'eau et de la rivière

Since 1530, the banks of the Sée have been home to many water mills.
The geographical conditions, similar to those of mountains, made this valley an industrial cradle whose energy that supplied the machines was essentially supplied by the wheels of the mills.

The Ecomuseum of the Moulin de la Sée presents the history and natural and heritage resources of one of the most beautiful valleys in Normandy.

Granville (50) Musée du Vieux Granville

The Musée du Vieux-Granville is a museum of local history, a memory of a city that has always turned towards the sea, which evokes Granville over the centuries, a cod port, a corsair city and a renowned seaside resort. A museum of regional ethnography, it presents collections of Norman headdresses, costumes, jewellery and furniture. Located in the "Logis du Roi", above the Grand Porte à pont-levis which gives access to the old fortified town, the Musée du Vieux Granville, together with the garden of the horseman of the Work, constitutes an important historical and architectural ensemble, embedded in the walls that majestically dominate the quays and the port.

Saint-Lô (50) - Musée du bocage normand
Between town and countryside, the Normandy Bocage Museum welcomes you to its exceptional natural setting of 12 hectares. The old farm of Boisjugan, transformed into a museum, tells the secrets of the Norman bocage from the 1800s to the present day.

How did the farms of the past work? What are the particularities of the famous Norman bocage? How was the butter that made the Channel's fortune made?

Immerse yourself in the heart of the rural world and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a life-size reconstituted stable, stable, workshop and butter factory. And visit the farm animals that are moving to the museum for the summer!

Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue (50) - Musée maritime de l'Île Tatihou
The Maritime Museum of Tatihou Island opened its doors on June 5, 1992. It was created to house the archaeological furniture from the wrecks of the Hougue (battle of May-June 1692).
The museum's cultural and scientific programme quickly expanded to include the following themes:
- maritime history and ethnography of the coasts of Basse-Normandie: mainly technical, economic and social history of fishing, oyster farming and shipbuilding.
- natural history of the coast: terrestrial flora of the coast, marine fauna and flora.
- terrestrial archaeology: results of archaeological excavations carried out on Tatihou- fine arts: Tatihou's fine arts collection is used to document the museum's ethnographic collections and local maritime history
- old collections: a collection of about 200 printed and manuscript works completes these themes. Nearly 100 of them predate 1800.
