Finding a "Maison du Québec" in Saint-Malo seems, at first glance, rather unusual... but, as it is Jacques Cartier's city...
Jacques Cartier
Here is someone who is known to have been born in 1491, without being sure of the exact date. We also know that he was born in Saint-Malo, but this is very disputed by Saint Servan and Paramé, two neighbouring towns. It is not clear who his parents are. In his youth, we know that he was interested in the maritime domain, but also in the judicial domain, and that he served as a "compère" on many occasions, his name as a "witness" appearing on many deeds.
But what is certain is that, at the request or under the protection of Francis I, he made three trips to North America, in search of a passage to Asia, or, more prosaically, in search of riches! And, in the process, he "discovered" Canada and opened the adventure of "New France"!
And that's all it took to find a "Maison du Québec" in his good "hometown" of Saint-Malo!
La Maison du Québec
In 1984, the city of Saint-Malo put it at the disposal of the Quebec government, offering visitors an incursion into today's Quebec.
In the heart of the city of Saint-Malo, there is a photographic exhibition of the most beautiful or interesting places in Quebec, whether natural, urban or heritage.
You can also listen to Quebec music.
And, if the Grand Large attracts you, you will find all the information you need to prepare a study trip, or a work period, in Quebec.
To find out about upcoming activities at the Maison du Québec, and about the various points just mentioned, contact the very active association "Saint-Malo/Québec".
