Tribute to the "sappers
This museum is unusual in itself, in that it pays tribute to the "sappers", those who are rarely mentioned in history books.
A "sapper" is someone who is in charge of making "sapes", underground works. In fact, more generally, he was part of the military engineers, whose mission was to ensure the mobility of the troops and to slow down the enemy's progression.
In other words, it is a combatant who is not in direct contact with the enemy, but whose mission is to help other combatants to fulfill their missions, either by facilitating their progression, or by protecting them with adequate works.
This "Musée du génie militaire d'Angers" is a tribute to them, through their history.
The museum
The museum proposes to reread the history of France from a particular angle, that is to say, from the angle of the "sappers".
The project was born in 1996, and its aim is to make the Engineers better known to a population which, for the most part, is not military.
And, to improve this knowledge, the most concrete way was to present the Engineers through their history and their actions. This approach, unusual in itself, is therefore extremely educational. This is why the museum offers a wide range of educational activities for schools, including self-guided tours, thematic workshops, and a "toolbox" containing numerous documents and exercises.
