A castle museum
Under Charles VII, Mehun was a royal city, and the most important people of the time, including Joan of Arc, were received there.
Today, the castle allows visitors to discover and better understand the Middle Ages in ideal conditions. Indeed, the rooms present collections and exceptional objects, sculptures, ancient texts, weapons, objects of the everyday life, the whole allowing to be immersed in the time. Yes, we are in the era!
And, when you are at the top of the dungeon, at 40 meters, the circular view that you have on more than 20 kilometers gives you a historical vertigo: are the mountains and valleys, all around, different from those that Charles VII saw?
Are they those of yesterday, or those of today? Dream on...
The porcelain pole
Mehun-sur-Yèvre is the birthplace of the largest porcelain factory in France, which has been producing since 1854.
Depending on the difficulty of the piece to be made, 10 to 20 kilos of wood are needed for 1 kilo of porcelain. The vast forests in the area were obviously very important for the creation of this industry, as well as the abundance of water, and the discovery of fine sand, clay, and, to a lesser extent, kaolin... not to mention the fact that the local workforce was less demanding than in Paris!
In this porcelain center, you will see ancient wonders in a resolutely modern building! Among the 4,000 pieces in the museum's collection, about 400 are on display, many of which are from the Pillivuyt collection, and more specifically from his artist's studio "La spéciale".
The gardens of the Duke of Berry
If you are there in August, don't miss the concerts that are given in the late afternoon in front of the terrace of the porcelain center.
And, all year long, go and stroll in the 3 hectares of this exceptional garden, where the arms of the rivers Yèvre and Annain flow through.
And you can go as far as the Canal de Berry, at the southern limit of the gardens.
