Maulévrier: Japan in Maine et Loire!

Maulévrier, the largest Japanese garden in Europe is in Maine et Loire!

As unusual as it may seem, it is in Maine-et-Loire that you will find the largest Japanese garden in Europe!

Its architectural and botanical setting, the serenity that emerges, the incredible sizes practiced on some trees and which make them true works of art reflected in the water, will make your visit something that will remain in your memory...

The 29 hectares of the park were part of the property of Château Colbert, destroyed during the Vendée wars, then rebuilt between 1815 and 1830.

Bought at the end of the 19th century, a Japanese landscape was created from, among other things, mussels and various elements from the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris.

But, from 1928, and following the death of the project's initiator, it was gradually abandoned.

Maulévrier, Maine et Loire, rebirth in 1980!

Fortunately, it was bought by the municipality in 1980, and a first association of volunteers undertook to restore it from old documents and recovered photographs. These works were recognized in 1987 by Japanese horticultural university professors.

Restoration work is becoming increasingly important and is still ongoing.

The result is very endearing, very exciting, very surprising and, whether one tries to understand the symbolism of the places, or simply, to let oneself be carried away and admire them, they cannot leave anyone indifferent.

The classified site represents 12 hectares, and it is good to plan several hours to be able to walk as quietly as possible!
