There is a workshop in Tours, l'Atelier d'Offard, which perpetuates the know-how of the great wallpaper manufacturers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with printing on the board.
Unfortunately unusual choices...
The company relies on a number of choices that are mainly based on artisanal manufacturing and natural origin such as the French production of its raw materials, which nowadays is becoming a little unusual!
A qualitative triptych...
The wallpapers that come out of this workshop are of a very high level, and this qualitative level is achieved thanks to a triptych of fundamental choices.
First of all, there are the colours. They are made from natural pigments, and the binder, rabbit skin glue, has survived the centuries. The result: shine and matte, and an infinite palette!
Then there's paper. It is made especially for the Atelier d'Offard, and the "base coat", the first layer of colour applied with large silk brushes, in an ancestral gesture, guarantees the pictorial qualities.
Finally, there is the printing itself, carried out on the board, colour after colour, fitting after fitting, on a manual press.
You can admire the application of the "background coating", and the technique of printing on the board with the video at the bottom of this article.
Custom-made...
One of the great assets of this artisanal production is that it can be adapted to all types of projects. Thus the workshop collaborates with artists, designers, contributes to the creation of spaces through unique decors... in the field of heritage, the workshop also carries out expertise and research, and reconstructs identical old decors!
Visit
It is very impressive to visit the workshop, because you can discover "in real life" the stages of manufacture, finding yourself immersed in a kaleidoscope of colours and materials? And a visit to the shop also proves to be a small pleasure of precious discoveries!
