First of all, why "fisheries"?
At first glance, it seems a little unusual to name a museum "les pêcheries" (the fisheries), when in fact all the municipal collections of the town of Fécamp are on display there, and as we shall see, we are going from a dizzying lookout... to the children!
By digging a little deeper, we discover that this museum, opened in 2017, occupies the premises of a former cod dryer which had belonged, long before, to the cod fishing company called "les pêcheries de Fécamp"... it all makes sense!
Shall we visit?
From the children's museum to the history of the town... and at the very top, the sea!
After passing the ground floor where there is a bookshop and an auditorium, you will pass by the mezzanine where the filleters' cloakroom is located, and the shipowner's office (of course, everyone knows that the filleters, usually wives, sisters, or mothers of sailors, are the ones who make the fishing nets).
Let's go to the second floor, where there is a lot to see...
Firstly, the "childhood museum" which, among other things, evokes Doctor Léon Dufour, a doctor from Fécamp who was a forerunner of childcare. It had also gathered together many objects from different cultures of the world, and devoted to the "breeding of the infant". You will also be able to admire a very beautiful collection... of baby bottles! Unusual, isn't it?
On the same floor, a part dedicated to the Caucasian domestic life: with a cinematographic setting, this part allows you to admire furniture, ceramics, costumes or jewellery...
Finally, still on the same floor, there is a third part devoted to Fine Arts, the painters having always been seduced by the cliffs and the light of the Fécamp coastline. Over time, we will therefore see works from the 16th to the 20th century. And what could be better than to present these works, there, echoing the surrounding landscape?
The third floor is dedicated to the fishing port of Fécamp, the capital of Newfoundland. The collections tell the story of the sailors, but also that of all those who, on land, carried out an activity directly related to fishing.
On the fourth floor, it is the history of the town, from the Dukes of Normandy to the industrial activity of herring and cod fishing, via the Atlantic Wall, and the activity of the seaside resort.
And then, at the very top, it's the sea! Yes, since you find yourself in a sublime belvedere, which opens up a view that is no less beautiful!
Several thousand works and objects of all kinds are presented according to these themes, organized floor by floor.
