French carrots?
We know, of course, the French gardens. We also know about vegetable gardens. But French-style vegetable gardens are unusual and unique!
And, in addition, it is magnificent!
These French vegetable gardens are part of the gardens of the castle of Villandry, and are really worth the detour because, more than being very surprising, it is very beautiful.
In a very pure Renaissance style, they take the form of nine squares of the same size, but with different geometric patterns, mixing, in equally different ways, vegetables and flowers.
There is a lot of work that takes into account the colors and their harmony between them (the blue of the leek, the green-yellow of the carrot tops, the red of some cabbages...), and the imperatives of cultivation, which require a three-year rotation of vegetables in order not to impoverish the soil.
The origins of the garden go back to the Middle Ages, in a monastic tradition later joined by an Italian influence.
Each year, 40 species of vegetables, belonging to eight botanical families, are presented in a multicolored checkerboard enriched with flowers.
