Saint-Georges-sur-la-Prée
This small village was, until the middle of the eighteenth century, the first ochre-producing site in France. It is, moreover, a deed dated October 2, 1571 which informs us about the time from which the ochre of Saint Georges was the object of a seigneurial monopoly and of an intensive marketing.
And so it is the ochre extracted from its subsoil, for eight centuries, that the village keeps in memory with this municipal museum that it presents, in a very touching way, on the website of the same name.
A museum in four parts
There are four different spaces that you will discover in this museum...
First, of course, the history of ochre. Then "To the magic of colors", reconstitution of a store of color merchant, with all the books and materials necessary for a good use of natural pigments.
You will also be able to climb into the attic and change time, since you will discover an evocation of village life during the last two centuries. Note that the objects presented come from donations from the inhabitants themselves.
Finally, back to our time with the gallery in which, throughout the year, many contemporary artists exhibit.
