Ferdinand de Lesseps
He is of course well known for having, among other things, pierced the Suez Canal, and that was no small feat! In his old age, he retired to his castle of La Chesnaye in Guilly, and it was therefore only logical that the Espace Mémoire du Patrimoine de l'Equipement et des Ponts et Chaussées should be created there later on.
The museum
This unusual museum, unique in France, presents everything related to equipment and roads and bridges. Its history is traced from Sully, appointed Grand Voyer of France in 1599, to the creation of the École des Ponts et Chaussées in 1747.
It is mainly organized around two exhibitions, one devoted to Ferdinand de Lesseps, and the other called "Memoirs of a Roadworker" (I would like to point out in passing that my name, Voyer, is the name of a function, that of the Voyer agent, the one who creates or takes care of roads, from the roadworker, to what is called today the Minister of Town and Country Planning!)
The second exhibition shows the life, the tools, of these people that we see working along the roads. There is also a remarkable and surprising exhibition of all kinds of materials.
