Jacques Cœur
Just a few words about Jacques Coeur, whose biography you can easily find. Let's just say that he was a banker, a businessman, an adventurer, a visionary...
Taking care of the taxes of king Charles VII, as Grand Argentier, he assumed this task... with interest(s)! He knew Joan of Arc well, and Agnes Sorel, the king's mistress. He drew new perspectives for France, then very small, towards Italy and the distant East. Very rich, he lost everything, found himself in prison, escaped, and, from Marseille, recovered his goods and his ships... He finally died at the head of a crusade, and François Villon told his destiny...
You can admire an evocation of this turbulent life on the façade of the Jacques Coeur Palace during the summer, with the "Nuits Lumière de Bourges".
The Route Jacques Coeur
The Route Jacques Coeur is a non-profit association whose goal is to promote and make better known the heritage of Berry. From there, and around the most beautiful architectural jewels, it irrigates a whole network of local actors.
We can say that to follow, in all or in part, this imaginary road, is to discover Berry in all its components, with the wealth of its history, and the diversity of its landscapes. Castles, abbeys, gardens and cities are part of this itinerary which crosses the Cher from North to South on about 180 kilometers which will lead you to visit 18 sites and cities!
And all these exemplary places create events to promote heritage and history, but also the more contemporary culture, craftsmanship and artistic practice of today.
Have a good, beautiful, and rich journey!
