The Loire, with its sandbanks, gives birth, here and there, to islands over time. And Béhuard is the only village that has taken up residence on an island, or the only island of the Loire that is a village, as you wish! An island that was built around a 300,000-year-old boulder!
Here, you can only hear the gentle rustle of the Loire swirling, the chirping of the fighting seagulls, and the song of the birds... Don't come and bawl there: a sign full of humour warns you: "Except in times of flood, the village can be visited on foot" !
Indeed, one of the charms of this atypical, unusual village, unique in France, is the floods with which the inhabitants live in good harmony!
Only the statue of the "Virgin and Child" escapes it, since it was placed on a rock so that its feet are a little above the historical flood of 1910.
There is a time, though, when the island welcomes thousands of visitors. In August, this is the pilgrimage dedicated to Mary, protector of the mariners of the Loire.
And finally... attention, respect... this very small town is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
