The encounter between a medieval epic, where tournaments are mentioned, and an industrial epic where oil drilling is mentioned; is quite unusual and improbable. And yet, it takes place in a castle whose buildings have a superb Norman architecture.
The castle of Crèvecœur
The castle of Crèvecœur is a small miracle, a unique example of small lordships lovingly preserved, almost intact.
It is composed of two parts: a high courtyard, housing the seigneurial dwelling, accessible by a single bridge, protected by these water-filled ditches, and by its 12th century wall, and, from the front, a farmyard, around which there is a farm, a dovecote, and a barn very nicely representative of the Norman half-timbered buildings.
This complex alone is already worth a visit!
The medieval epic
From March to October, Château de Crèvecœur offers unique and, for some, very unusual events. You can admire the thematic exhibitions, attend the equestrian competitions of knights with armour and banners, participate in medieval activities, taste dishes in the tavern, fish in the moat....
The industrial epic
This epic is that of the Schlumberger brothers whose foundation established a remarkable museum in the castle's barn. You will discover their research and then their results, which have simply revolutionized mining exploration and oilfield development around the world.
It is true that there is a very unusual shock here, between the past so well preserved of the peaceful buildings of the castle, the Middle Ages which comes to life there every summer, and the oil fields! Three excellent reasons to spend a rich, calm and rewarding day there!
