The astronomical clock
You can admire the astronomical clock by going to the Saint-Etienne cathedral, itself admirable! Unusual detail: at the top of its bell tower, there is not a rooster... but a pelican!
In 396 steps, you are there!
At the time, Bourges was the capital of France, Charles VII, who resided there, being very wickedly nicknamed "the little king of Bourges".
It is him who made it in 1424 and offered it to the inhabitants of the city for the baptism of his son, the future Louis XI.
It is one of the oldest astronomical clocks preserved in France.
Today, it would seem that it is very simple, in the sense that it was not considered useful to add small farandoles of animated characters or flashy decorations.
It is presented in a wooden sideboard which represents a belfry.
It has two dials one under the other.
The one above gives the hours. The one below indicates the day in the zodiac, the phases of the moon and its monthly movement, the annual movement of the sun, and the position of the sun in the sky.
Its precision is extraordinary for the time, since it is only one second late... every 150 years.
